In Grades 11 and 12 students choose one subject from each of six groups, three at Higher Level (HL) and three at Standard Level (SL). Theory of Knowledge (TOK), the Extended Essay (EE) and Creativity, Activity, Service (CAS) form the core.
The IB Diploma Programme is a balanced two-year programme: even students who specialise in science or the arts take one subject from each of the six groups. Three subjects are studied at Higher Level (HL), three at Standard Level (SL).
The core
In Theory of Knowledge (TOK), students question how they know what they know. The Extended Essay is an independent study in which each student turns a question of their own into a 4,000-word research paper. CAS consists of creativity, activity and service experiences sustained over the two years.
Alongside the MEB diploma
Turkish citizens also continue the compulsory MEB courses in Grades 11 and 12 and receive the MEB high school diploma. Extra study hours are offered in the second term of Grade 12 for students preparing for the YKS.
Students cannot start the IB Diploma Programme in Grade 12; the programme lasts two years.
